Climate change and sea level rise are shaping the Seychelles Islands in spectacular and dramatic ways. Clefts in the sand on the beaches and spectacular granite rock formations are some of the more aesthetically pleasing changes, but there are more serious issues for locals. In a worst-case scenario, a simultaneous high-tide and flash flood could destroy substantial areas of populated land and infrastructure which have been developed on these low lying coral islands.Captions and Photo source: ©© Lawrence Hislop / UNEP

According to the EPA, global sea level has risen by eight inches since 1870. This change is already affecting many low lying islands that have had to adapt. Some populations are moving to higher areas, or are trying to buy land from other countries to migrate its citizens, and some have even developed new ways of farming to protect their agriculture.
