Sri Lanka Still in Search of a Comprehensive Disaster Management Plan

The pulverised beach in Kalmunai, located in eastern Sri Lanka, was stripped of most of its standing structures by the ferocity of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami’s waves. Lives were then lost due to failure to effectively communicate early warnings, but current glaring lapses in disaster management continue to cost lives on an island increasingly battered by extreme weather events.

Only those who have faced disasters head-on understand and appreciate the need to think and act at lightening-quick speeds. Cultivating awareness among the general public – is perhaps the single most important aspect of a comprehensive national plan, according to experts.
