Months after Bay of Plenty locals cleared their beaches of oil and container debris, the job has begun again as the stricken Rena loses more cargo overboard.
The ship split in two during severe weather over the weekend, but its halves remain on the Astrolabe Reef near Tauranga where it grounded in October, belching oil and sparking New Zealand’s worst environmental maritime disaster.
About 150 containers were lost from the ship over the weekend, with 12 containers washing ashore at Waihi Beach, Bowentown Heads and Matakana Island.
