The legendary National Geographic photographer and storytelling team of Frans Lanting and Chris Eckstrom, have brought their latest book, “Bay of Life: From Wind to Whales,” from the page to the walls of the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History in a photography exhibit that opens Thursday.
The exhibition serves a centerpiece for Lanting and Eckstrom’s larger Bay of Life Project, which connects their work, exploring and documenting stories in the Monterey Bay, with conservation efforts through education and engagement with local partners, such as the Sempervirens Fund, Amah Mutsun Land Trust and Watsonville Wetlands Watch, among others.
The duo kicked off its project with the book and a presentation at the Rio Theatre in November, and it continues with the exhibit and educational programs created in collaboration with the Santa Cruz County Office of Education and others. The exhibition is sponsored by Bay Photo, with additional support from the Humanities Institute at UC Santa Cruz.
“We’re excited to share this important new work from Frans and Chris,” said Robb Woulfe, executive director of the Museum of Art & History. “The images and stories provide a space to engage in a dialogue about the interdependency of people and nature, while at the same time showcasing the region’s unique natural diversity…”
