70,000 turtle eggs to be whisked far from oil

An effort to scoop thousands of turtle eggs from their nests to save them from death in the oily Gulf of Mexico will begin in the coming weeks in a desperate attempt to keep an entire generation of threatened species from vanishing.

Saturday, 820 Hands Across the Sand rallies were scheduled in all 50 US States and in 34 countries. Thousands of people worldwide gathered and stood hand in hand. The goal, as organizers put it, was to “form symbolic barriers against spilling oil.”
