A powerful typhoon with surging waves slammed into Japan on Wednesday, packing sustained winds of up to 100 mph (162 kph), and made landfall in the early afternoon near the city of Hamamatsu, about 125 miles (200 kilometers) west of Tokyo. The fast-moving storm went past the capital in the evening and then headed into the Tohoku region, which was devastated by the March 11 tsunami, apparently, “without damaging (the Daiichi plant nuclear) reactors’ cooling systems, which are crucial to keeping them under control.”
