Julien Drach (b. 1973) is a French photographer, filmmaker and Art Director. His photography, which is at once painterly and cinematic, sets a richly layered scene, inviting us into the story.

“In my photos, I blend two major sources of inspiration: painting and film, but it is an unconscious creative process. I’m constantly searching for poetry and aesthetics. It’s fundamental. Each era has a need for poetry. By mixing painting and cinema, I’m trying to erase the notion of time and place. It could be any time. I love when you lose the sense of time…” – Julien Drach (quoted in The London List, 2022)

“… Julien Drach presents compositions close to Italian realist cinema: “I like to walk through these cities, take their pulse, capture their spirit. They inspired me with these still moments in a world that is fleeing”. And it is because we are painfully aware of the “never again” that weighs on these Mediterranean cultures condemned to “modernize”, and therefore to disappear, that we enter into the silence of the non-reassuring images of this “insomniac photographer”, who takes us off the conventional paths of contemporary photography” – Serge Rezvani in MEP, 2014
