Talking About Ecology Like a Contemporary Artist

by Stéphane Bonnet

excerpt:

As a visual artist, 1011 (the entity she forms with a philosopher husband) questions recent history, takes a critical look at the domination that technology exercises over humans and, through certain creations presented in series, take on subjects such as the ecological crisis or the decline of life…Her series entitled Medea’s Dress, evoking pesticide poisoning, hits the mark particularly well, as does her approach to plastic pollution in her Panta Rhei series. Ammonite detail from the series "Anthropocene" by 1011, Grenoble Museum Collection. Adagp © 1011, used with permission.

from the Artist’s Statement:
“Commissioned by the Grenoble Museum , this series is produced in the spirit of 18th century paleontology plates.

Fossils of ammonites, fish or trilobites are precisely reproduced. However, an element in each of the plates does not come from geological time but from the contemporary period. Plastic toys, silicone objects, are included in the board. Objects not coming from slow natural sedimentation but from the immediacy of our modern world.
The fossils which have wonderfully reached us through the very slow process of sedimentation are contrasted with their plastic ersatz , modern fossils. These will be found in nature in millions of years…”
